Letter From The President
Children's Security Blanket, Inc
1855 E. Main Street Suite 14, Box 101
Spartanburg, SC 29307
The Children's Security Blanket, Inc. was created to offer financial assistance
and support to families with children facing life-threatening illnesses. When a child
becomes ill, our "security blanket" seeks to embrace the entire family with warmth and
caring. Our mission is to provide assistance with transportation, lodging, meals, and
other expenses not covered by insurance when families travel outside of Spartanburg
County for treatments. The Security Blanket Board of Directors and volunteers
also host numerous events, including shopping sprees and parties, to bring joy into the
children's lives and take emphasis off their illnesses.
Be assured, we are available to assist you whenever possible. As we continue to build our
organization's funding and ability to serve families, we are very excited to have information
on other groups that offer assistance, as well. Materials regarding financial and support
programs suited to the specific needs of pediatric oncology families are available by request.
Our packet's purpose is to bring relief from the burdens your family may encounter during
this difficult process.
We look forward to working with your family and "providing hope for the future."
Sincerely,
Tom Russell
President, Children's Security Blanket

Mission, Vision, History
Mission
The Mission of The Children's Security Blanket is to provide financial support, connect those in need with those who can assist, and deliver hope to families whose children have received a diagnosis of childhood cancer.
Vision
The Children's Security Blanket seeks solutions to assist families with unforseen expenses associated with the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer by providing food, lodging and travel to families.
History
Tom Russell and Carol Moeller founded The Security Blanket in 2001. The first year, various needs were met for four families of children coping with cancer treatments. The next year, 2002, doubling the number of children to eight families, The Security Blanket began to take on a legacy of family-to-family. Families shared information and the children, many having lost their hair, could meet on common ground. Eight years later the "family" has grown to fifty-three, but the burdens seem much lighter, when they meet under a "blanket of love".
Trinity United Methodist Church, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was the first church to open their hearts and facilities to provide spiritual support. Local support came from social workers, and grief counselors from Duke Hospital. Today, foundations collaborate as partners. The first to become a partner was the Spartanburg Optimist Club. The Spartanburg County Foundation, The United Way, and the Christian Community Foundation are other supporters.
Out of four-thousand entries, The Optimist Club awarded their 2002 International Award, for serving the youth in a community, to The Security Blanket.
Today the board consists of sixteen volunteers. All of this is possible through fundraisers, donations, grants, and community support. When a child becomes part of our family we present them with a carefully chosen, prayed over, blanket. When a child receives treatment for cancer, they wrap themselves in their security blanket.
